I appreciate the continuous opportunities for skill development and the chance to stay current with cutting-edge technology and innovative tools. Working on meaningful projects that positively impact the community has been rewarding, and the variety of these projects keeps my role exciting and challenging.”

The guidance and mentorship from experienced colleagues has fostered a positive and motivating atmosphere. Building relationships with clients and receiving their positive feedback further enhances my sense of accomplishment.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“My experience at Carthage was instrumental in preparing me for my career, particularly through its hands-on and practical approach to learning. One of the most valuable aspects was the real-world, internship-style teaching provided by the professors. This approach allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, mirroring the challenges and problem-solving required in a professional setting. Moreover, working on projects like mapping out and creating a basic utility network map for Carthage’s maintenance was highly relevant. This hands-on project not only honed my technical skills but also gave me experience in managing and visualizing spatial data, which is crucial in my current role as a GIS analyst. These practical experiences, combined with the supportive and application-focused teaching approach, equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in my career.”

“Additionally, the opportunity to learn how to fly a drone was a significant advantage. This skill has directly translated to my current role, where operating drones is a key part of my responsibilities. The training I received at Carthage gave me a solid foundation and confidence to use this technology effectively in my job.”

How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?

“One notable example of how the liberal arts skills I gained at Carthage have been valuable in my career is when I created a utility network web map for Carthage’s maintenance department. This project required a blend of critical thinking, problem-solving, and hands-on learning. Working with GPS Trimble devices in the field, we meticulously set up and calibrated the equipment to ensure compatibility with iPhones and iPads. This process involved troubleshooting technical issues and adapting the technology to different environments, which sharpened our problem-solving skills.”

“Once we collected the data, we collaborated to develop a comprehensive GIS web map that was user-friendly and accessible for the maintenance team. The project underscored the importance of clear communication and teamwork, as we had to coordinate effectively to integrate our findings and create a functional tool.”

Why did you choose Carthage?

“I chose Carthage for several key reasons that aligned closely with my academic and personal aspirations. Firstly, the small class sizes at Carthage were a significant draw for me. I valued the opportunity to engage more personally with professors and peers, which fostered a more interactive and supportive learning environment. Carthage’s commitment to hands-on learning and real-world experiences, such as the practical projects and technology training I engaged in, was highly appealing.

“Another crucial factor was Carthage’s location. Situated perfectly between two major cities, it offered a unique blend of accessibility to a variety of professional and cultural opportunities while maintaining a serene and focused campus environment.”

What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?

“My Carthage experience significantly expanded my career opportunities by providing a unique blend of personalized academic support, strategic location, and hands-on learning. The practical projects I engaged in, such as learning to fly drones and creating utility network maps, equipped me with relevant skills that directly apply to my current role. Additionally, serving as a tutor for the Geospatial Department enriched my understanding of the field and honed my communication skills, which have been invaluable in my career.”

What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?

“Two Carthage professors who significantly contributed to my success were Professor Matthew Zorn and Professor Wenjie Sun. Prof. Zorn played a pivotal role in enhancing my skills in public speaking and scientific applications, including the use of drones. His guidance in operating drones not only provided me with valuable technical expertise, but also improved my ability to present complex information clearly and confidently. His support in developing effective communication skills has been crucial in interacting with clients in my career. On the other hand, Prof. Sun was instrumental in helping me master computer troubleshooting, GIS applications, and GPS equipment. Her hands-on teaching approach enabled me to become proficient in GIS and effectively use and troubleshoot GPS technology, skills that are essential in my current role.”

What role have the values in Carthage's mission, "Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service — Together" played in your life?

“Carthage’s mission has profoundly shaped my personal and professional life. The emphasis on ‘seeking truth’ encouraged me to think critically and assert my own perspectives rather than conforming to others’ opinions. My experiences as a student-athlete reinforced ‘building strength,’ teaching me resilience and the confidence to stand firm in my beliefs. Additionally, the value of ‘inspiring service’ motivated me to use my skills and voice to positively impact my community. Together, these values have equipped me with the confidence to speak up for what I believe in and approach challenges with integrity and strength.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“Some of my favorite memories from Carthage include my time as a student-athlete on the women’s soccer team. Competing and training with my teammates taught me the value of teamwork and discipline. Another cherished memory is spending time with my roommate at the lake. Those moments of relaxation and connection provided a welcome balance to the academic and athletic demands of college life. It was during these times that I built lasting friendships and learned the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance.”

Tips for current Carthage students?

“My key piece of advice for students is that you get as much out of your experience as you put into it. Actively engage with your coursework and take advantage of all the opportunities available to you. Be proactive in seeking out internships, projects, and extracurricular activities that will enrich your learning and professional growth. Utilize your professors as much as you can. They are not only knowledgeable but also well-connected in their fields. Building strong relationships with them can provide you with valuable mentorship, career advice, and networking opportunities. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, guidance, or insights — they are there to support your success.”
