Over the past four years, Kyle Huss has used Carthage to his advantage, participating in multiple programs and organizations on campus and interning at three separate companies including Jockey International, the public accounting firm KPMG, and Pfizer.
“Carthage has so many connections in the business world that give students a big boost above other colleges,” he said.
Through his internship opportunity at KPMG, Kyle was able to nail down a full-time job before graduating in May 2017 and will be working with the firm directly after he graduates.
“Accounting gives students a great background to be beneficial in many areas of business. Being able to understand the numbers of a business allows you to understand most other parts of a business. Accounting also allows for a ton of job opportunities after school and is growing very fast. Almost every accounting major has secured a job before graduation.”
“I have grown as a student and in my career because of the opportunities that Carthage has provided. Carthage has so many connections in the business world that give students a big boost above other colleges.”
“I will be working for the public accounting firm KPMG directly after graduation.”
How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?
“Professor Julie Dawson was the main reason why I switched my major from biology to accounting. She is an amazing professor who has taught me a ton and has also challenged me to be a better student and professional.”
“Intermediate Accounting (ACC 3010) has been my favorite class at Carthage so far. I really enjoyed it because we were able to apply a variety of accounting principles to real world problems. I also really enjoyed the challenge that the course provided.”
“I am a member of Delta Upsilon. The fraternity has been a great way to develop and maintain many great relationships. I also participate in many of the intramural leagues that Carthage offers.”
“Intermediate Accounting (ACC 3010) has definitely been one of my toughest courses as well, but that is why I enjoyed it so much. It was difficult because we learned so much material at such a fast pace. It is a great course to prepare students for the professional atmosphere of accounting.”
Internships or on-campus employment
“I started my first internship with Jockey International in the internal audit department. This was a good first internship because I was exposed to many parts of the business. I was also given the opportunity to travel to Seattle and different parts of the Midwest.
“My second internship was with the public accounting firm, KPMG, during busy season. I worked on an audit team in Chicago and received challenging hands-on experience as I worked 60-70 hours per week. I loved moving down to Chicago and getting to experience the city life with KPMG. I received and accepted a full-time offer with KPMG to work in their Chicago office after graduation.
“My third internship was with the pharmaceutical company, Pfizer. I worked as a financial analyst intern, which was great experience in financial planning and analysis. I loved the challenge of learning a new side of finance and a new industry.”
Opportunities at Carthage
“I have had the opportunity to work in various offices on campus and be a residential assistant for one year. They were all great experiences to slowly gain responsibility. I am also currently participating in the Smeds Executive Internship Program.”
Favorite moments and memories at Carthage
“My freshman year was by far my favorite memory of Carthage so far. I met so many people and made so many friends that will be relationships that will last a lifetime.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot on campus is the conference room in the Straz Center that overlooks the lake on the second floor. I love to sit in there, plug in my headphones, study, and just look over the lake. It is absolutely a beautiful place to relax and unwind.”
Biggest surprise so far
“The biggest surprise has been the amount of opportunities that have come from Carthage so far. I have grown as a student and in my career because of the opportunities that Carthage has provided. Carthage has so many connections in the business world that give students a big boost above other colleges.”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“When I was 8-years-old I had absolutely no clue what an accountant was. Being a professional baseball player was the only option for me at that point in my life.”
Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?
“If you are considering an accounting major make sure you give a 110 percent effort right from the beginning. It is very important to master the basic skills in the lower level classes. Accounting classes build off of each other, so it is very important to always stay on top of the material.”
