Concentration in Graphic Design

As a marketing major at Carthage with a concentration in graphic design, senior Elanta Slowek possesses an eye for both business and creativity. Through study tours in Europe, internships in Chicago, and thought-provoking classes on campus, Elanta has been able to approach her education from “as many perspectives as possible.” 

She credits her participation in Carthage track and field and the student business organization Velocity Consulting for invigorating her college career in and outside of the classroom.

Now preparing to start the Master in Business Design and Innovation program at Carthage, Elanta reflects on the professors who encouraged her studies and the experiences that have led her to graduate school. 

“For those considering going into marketing, or even graphic design, my advice would be to approach your work from as many perspectives as possible. Use the tools that you learn in the classroom in unison with real world experiences. It is then that one can capture an emotional response from their audience or target market.”

Career goal

“After I graduate, I plan to stay at Carthage for another year to complete the new Master of Science in Business Design and Innovation program, while simultaneously becoming a graduate assistant for the Track and Field team and applying for the Fulbright Scholarship to do research in Europe.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

“There are several professors who come to mind, such as Jennifer Madden, Julio Rivera, Edward Montanaro, Benjamin Taft, Margaret Oliver, and Allen Klingenberg, to name a few. All of these professors have contributed to my academic success with their patience, skills, teaching abilities, wisdom, friendliness and willingness to put in extra time.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class at Carthage so far was Principles of Marketing because it was one of many introductions to my future career, as well as a determining factor as to whether I really wanted to go into the field. This class consisted of analyzing advertisements and understanding their target markets. I also worked on writing a group marketing plan for an original idea that was presented at the conclusion of the semester. This class solidified my desire to continue in the field based on the assignments and, of course, the professor. Julio Rivera is excellent.”

Campus involvement

“I am a part of Velocity Consulting. We are a student business organization that specializes in project management and organization. We handle real-life Kenosha clients and businesses that wish to upgrade their ventures. I also participate in track and field at Carthage and competed at the national level, placing sixth for indoor high jump, second for outdoor javelin, and second for discus. I helped place Carthage third overall at the national meet last spring.”

Toughest class

“My toughest class at Carthage so far was in computer science. I started college as a CS minor, but at the conclusion of the semester, I decided I wanted to continue to work with computers but not in coding, so I switched to graphic design.”

Internships or on-campus employment

“My first internship started in July 2017 at Point B Communications, an advertising agency in Chicago. I was a creative intern for half the time, which involved working with the Adobe Suite to develop visual advertisements such as magazine covers, decals, and other promotional projects. The other half of my time was utilized by meeting with clients and understanding target markets, agency management, basic accounting, and data and file organization. This combination, that used both my marketing and graphic design knowledge, allowed me to see a project for a client all the way from creative meetings and target market research to the final creation of the visual advertisement products.”

Opportunities at Carthage

“In fall of 2016, I had the opportunity to study abroad in London, England, at Queen Mary University. This is where I studied British business law, management, poetry, and the history of medieval Islam, as well as training in track and field at Mile End Stadium with the team. I also traveled to Holland and Poland during my time there. I met many people from all over the world, particularly immigrants from the Middle East. London had proven to be one of the most economically diverse cities in the world with a model that I hope to be apart of in the near future.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“My favorite moment at Carthage was when I officially finished my freshman year. When I started college, I wasn’t sure I wanted to go in the first place. My first semester, I got really sick and had to stop playing sports. I also had a difficult time adjusting to the curriculum and level of work that was required. However, when I finished all of my final exams, I knew that I had what it takes to finish school.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is down by the lake on a nice, warm day or night.”

Biggest surprise so far

“My biggest surprise so far was that Carthage started a Master of Science in Business Design and Innovation program. This led me to apply and now I will stay an additional year to continue my studies. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old self would be happy with my career path because she always was creative and business-minded. She would think that the stuff I am currently doing is pretty cool and would be happy to learn that the little girl inside is still there. She would remind me to never forget to have fun with my work.”

Why Carthage?

“Carthage was the first college I visited and after visiting several more, Carthage was the one I fit into the most. The campus is beautiful and I had the opportunity to continue athletics at a high, national level. Lastly, the academics and resources available are of high quality and to our disposal.”
