As a finance major and mathematics minor at Carthage, Michael Viroglio is well versed in analyzing data and statistics.

When asked to analyze his own school career at Carthage, Michael pointed to three main components that impact his learning: Small class sizes. Close relationships with faculty. And access to great internships.

To Michael, these things have really made the difference.

He is as active off campus as he is in class. He’s already had two intensive internships, he traveled to Hong Kong on a J-Term study tour, and he has competed throughout the state as a member of Carthage’s math team.

After finding his passion for data science and statistics, with help from management and marketing professor Thomas Groleau, Michael looks forward to using what he has learned at Carthage in his professional career.

“I chose to attend Carthage because it seemed to be a place where my passions were. I knew I would also have the opportunity to develop close relationships with faculty members and students. Carthage’s commitment to small class sizes and personalized learning greatly helped me learn where I wanted to go with my professional career.”

Career goal

“I hope to continue my work in data analytics in the life insurance industry and attend graduate school for computational science or applied statistics.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

Dr. Thomas Groleau was instrumental in helping me discover what I am passionate about in my professional career. I am truly thankful for all of his support and advice in my time at Carthage, and I know that many other students are as well.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class at Carthage was my introductory statistics class with Dr. Groleau. It was my first real exposure into the world of statistics, and it ignited a fire that continues to drive me to learn more about data science and statistics.”

Internships or on-campus employment

“I have interned at United Hospital System as a business analyst intern in their Finance Department, and I am currently interning at Northwestern Mutual as an analytics intern in their Data and Analytics Division. I am very grateful for both of these opportunities because they allowed me the opportunity to apply what I have learned in college to real world applications. I obtained my first internship at United during the fall semester of my sophomore year. I would highly recommend students seek to intern as early as possible to maximize their opportunities when they graduate down the road.”

Scholarships

“I received several scholarships upon entering Carthage, most notably the F. Gregory Campbell Scholarship. My experience at Carthage would not have been possible without this, and I have never taken it for granted.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“My favorite Carthage memory was the night we landed in Hong Kong for our J-Term study tour. I will never forget the excitement I felt at being able to have the chance to experience such an amazing place. Another great moment would include when the Carthage team placed second at the Wisconsin Math Modeling Competition. It was a proud moment for us to represent Carthage among so many peer institutions.”

Favorite spot on campus

“The conference room on the upstairs of the David A. Straz, Jr. Center (the one overlooking the lake).”

Biggest surprise so far

“I never expected that I would ever want to study math at the college level. This was a decision I made later in my college career, and I still have a long way to go. Nonetheless, studying math was one of the best decisions I could have made. My current internship experience is confirming that.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old self wanted to be a weatherman. I always enjoyed seeing if their predictions were right or wrong. In my current career path, prediction and predictive modeling is an integral part. I think my 8-year-old self would be amused by how much more there is to predict than weather.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“DIVERSIFY YOURSELF. Finance is a much broader field than most incoming freshmen give it credit for. Learn as much about the different areas of finance as you can, and develop a game plan to gain exposure and skills in an area that interests you.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose to attend Carthage because it seemed to be a place where my passions were. I knew I would also have the opportunity to develop close relationships with faculty members and students. Carthage’s commitment to small class sizes and personalized learning greatly helped me learn where I wanted to go with my professional career.”
