Career goal

“I would love to design movie posters, album covers, and I hope to work in the field of advertising.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

Professor Laura Huaracha has had an impact on my Carthage graphic design career from the very beginning. After she interviewed me and observed my portfolio, she awarded me the Communication and Digital Media Scholarship that confirmed my attendance to Carthage. She motivated me to dig deeper into my graphic design experience and creativity, and gave me helpful critiques.”

Favorite class

“Communication Survey was my favorite class because I was able create and design many different projects. I designed a logo for Professor Julio Rivera and created a campaign with group members as well! These projects were long and required hard work, but I ended up creating things that I had no clue were within my level of work. This class always motivated me to learn more, ask questions, and keep designing.”

Campus involvement

“I am a part of Carthage Women’s Soccer, I work at Barnes & Noble at Carthage, and I also participate in the DRAFT club for graphic designers at Carthage. I involve myself in these activities because they are beneficial to my learning, my health, and my future success!”

Toughest class

“Spanish 3010 has been my toughest class as it is required to speak an entirely different language. However, the challenge has been worth it and will pay off. Studying is a top priority, and I definitely try my best!”

Opportunities at Carthage

“I have had the opportunity to present my sexual assault awareness campaign that I created with my Communication Survey group. After presenting this campaign, it was used by an on-campus fraternity to promote awareness and make a difference.”

Scholarships

“I received the Communication and Digital Media Scholarship. This scholarship finalized my decision to go to Carthage! It made me feel as though I had enough talent to succeed at Carthage, and there is nothing more motivating than that.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“Some of my favorite Carthage moments have been team bonding with the soccer team and orientation. I enjoyed these moments a lot because I got to meet a ton of people and make great friends!”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is Starbucks in the A.W. Clausen Center. It’s a fun place to do homework with friends while being able to drink tea or a cold frappuccino. It is a great, relaxing environment!”

Biggest surprise so far

“The biggest surprise was how easy it was to make friends at Carthage! Everyone is open to friendships and getting to know everyone.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old self would think that my career is perfect. Even when I was a kid, I always loved doing art activities!”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“If any student is interested in art, specifically with graphic design, they should major in it. It teaches you all aspects of art and multiple techniques that are used to portray any message you want to send. Graphic arts has such a wide variety of job opportunities as well; you can pick and choose whatever form of art best fits you!”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because the Art Department seemed wonderful. I heard about many awesome opportunities that graphic design majors have, and I got the CDM scholarship as well! My second reason, aside from academics, was that I liked the soccer program and wanted to play here.”
