Career goal

“After graduating from Carthage, I will pursue a career in public relations as a public relations specialist. I also hope to start my own business later down the line.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

“Professor Jennifer Bluma has been one of my favorite professors at Carthage. Her public speaking class is one of the reasons I switched my major into the Communications Department. Her overall style of teaching was awesome.”

Favorite class

“Public Speaking with Prof. Bluma has been my favorite class so far. The public speaking lessons in that class have transferred to almost all my classes and life in general. Prof. Bluma was great, and I had a bunch of friends in the class with me.”

Campus involvement

“Two groups that have provided me some of my favorite experiences are My Brother’s Keeper and the Black Student Union. The My Brother’s Keeper advisor, Roger Moreano — director of equity and inclusion at Carthage, has taught us many valuable life lessons surrounding race and inequality. My favorite experience with this group has been having breakfast at President Swallow’s house to discuss our experiences at Carthage.

In the Black Student Union, I am the social chair. This has given me the opportunity to incorporate the skills I learn in my public relations classes in real life. My favorite memory with this group has been hosting our end of the year BSU bbq, it was a day filled with food, fun, and friends.”

Toughest class

Accounting has been my toughest class. I’m not the best at math and that class had lots of it.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“My favorite Carthage moment has been hosting the 2019 CCIW Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It was nice running on our home track for the first time, and the whole weekend was filled with a lot of good energy.”

Biggest surprise so far

“The biggest surprise so far has been how much the professors are willing to help students succeed. The professors at Carthage do everything they can to make sure we do well in the classroom and beyond.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“Others should consider this major because all of the professors in it are great and ready to help you every step of the way. It’s a nice major for those who enjoy communications and business.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because it is close to home, but far enough where I can experience new things. The small class sizes allow me to really connect with my professors, the track team made me feel at home, and, of course, the lake view is beautiful.”
