Desirae Murphy came to Carthage to playwomen’s lacrosse, and now she can’t imagine attending any other school.
“The best opportunity I’ve gotten is the chance to experience every aspect of college that I’ve wanted,” she said. “I’m so lucky to be able to play a college sport, maintain a high GPA, work on campus, and still have plenty of time to be a part of all the clubs and organizations on campus that I want to.”
She feels as though social work is her life calling. She has always loved working with and helping people, she said, and she’s interested in the political aspects of the career.
“It just sort of fell into place for me,” she said. “I feel that no job other than social work would be fulfilling enough for me. On top of that, Carthage’s social work program has all the support and resources I need to greatly succeed. It more then adequately prepares you for the next step in your future.”
Desirae has had many opportunities at Carthage, from research trips to social services work in the Kenosha area. She likes the personal relationships students form with professors.
“The closeness within the department is great,” she said. “I could go to any professor within the department and not only would they know my name, but they would know who I am and what my future aspirations are. It’s great because that can really push you to your full potential and network you into the community.”
After graduation, Desirae wants to go on to graduate school and hopes to someday work in the city of Chicago.
“I want to work with families in family and child services or work with unions.”
“They’re all so great, but Dani Geary has really stood out for me. Her teaching style does more than teach you about a subject or yourself. She challenges you and she prepares you to deeply understand and make a change.”
“Social Welfare Policy Analysis. We have such great discussions in class. Not only does the class challenge me, but also it has taught me a lot about myself and an ever-expanding amount about policy. The class fuels me to go out into the world to know and discover even more about policy.”
“My toughest class so far has been art because it’s not a class I would normally take, so at times it can get frustrating.”
Favorite moments at Carthage
“There have been a lot. All of the memories from lacrosse, homecoming is great each year, and I’ll never forget that first week freshman year.”
Biggest surprise so far?
“How great the small school feel really is.”
