“The faculty and staff in the Music Department are incredible, which is reason enough to consider the major.”

Career goal

“I plan to find a job as a choir director in a high school. Perhaps I will also teach private lessons and find work performing.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

“Honestly, it’s hard to pick just one. So many have had a hand in my college career so far, and there are even more yet to come. I will advocate wholeheartedly for the Music Department professors. From rehearsal to lessons to practicing in any small amount of spare time available, they are there for you and willing to lend a hand.”

Favorite class

“I have to say that my favorite class here at Carthage had to be Issues in American History with Professor Dave Gartner. He manages to make a subject that I already have an interest in and raise the bar. Honestly, the class is an absolutely great time.”

Campus involvement

“I belong to several musical ensembles as well as the music fraternity on campus, Lambda Kappa. Both give me many opportunities to grow as a person and to bring joy to the community.”

Toughest class

“The hardest class I have taken is probably Vocal Pedagogy. I personally found the material extremely interesting, but it moved fast and threw out some serious technical jargon. Some of the concepts couldn’t really be fathomed because it was mostly about sound and how it interacts with the vocal tract.”

Opportunities at Carthage

“I perform in the Carthage Choir and Carthage Chorale and have participated in a Music Theatre Workshop.

“I have been on three trips abroad with Carthage. First, a choir tour in Hungary, Slovenia, and Italy, followed by an international chorale competition in Austria. I’ve also taken a trip traveling across Vienna, Austria, and Kecskemét, Hungary.”

“I received the merit scholarship, along with a few others, and an audition-based music scholarship. These awards have meant the world to me. It takes some financial burden off of me and allows me to focus on what I need to focus on.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“I won the international chorale contest. Ten choirs from 10 countries entered, and Carthage Choir managed to come out on top. We spent the year working hard and polishing the chosen pieces, turning that work into a win.”

Favorite spot on campus

“I really enjoy lying on a hammock by The Tower on a nice spring day. I sometimes take a speaker to play music, take a nap, or hang out with friends.”

Biggest surprise so far

“I knew that I would be afforded many opportunities, but I could never have imagined exactly how many.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“I think that he’d be disappointed that he wasn’t a pro athlete or something, but he would definitely be happy to know that I was having lots of fun.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“Don’t underestimate the amount of work you need to do to succeed. It’s tough, but it’s very rewarding when it all works out.”

Why Carthage?

“The Music Program offered me a lot of flexibility, allowing me to adapt if my plans changed.”
