Career goal

“After graduating from Carthage, I hope to pursue a master’s degree in data science. Data analysis has recently become a major interest of mine, so I hope to further my understanding in the field and eventually work as a data scientist or analyst.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

“The faculty at Carthage really want to see you succeed, and they have a lot of connections to help you after you graduate. For example, Professor Catherine Lau always lets students know when she hears of an internship or job that she thinks they would enjoy. Career Specialist Thomas Wood has done a lot for me in terms of resume building and profile editing on LinkedIn and Handshake.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class has been my econometrics class with Professor Ron Cronovich. This class is what made me fall in love with data analysis and is ultimately what inspired me to pursue a master’s degree in data science.”

Campus involvement

“I am involved with the mens tennis team, and I’ve experienced the most memorable times of my life as a player. I will always remember the times we spent together, from competing for conference championships in 50 degree weather to spring break trips together in Sanlando Springs, Fla.”

Internships or on-campus employment

“During my junior year, I worked as a research fellow in the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business. This fellowship expanded my knowledge and deepened my relationship with my professors as I got to help them on a lot of their research projects.”

Opportunities at Carthage

“My senior thesis project in economics was a really enlightening opportunity. I got to work an a project from start to finish. While it was a lot of work, it was a really proud moment when I look back and see how I was able to formulate my own question and use data to answer it.”

Scholarships

“I have received a few Carthage scholarships, and I am very grateful for each one of them. Without them, I would not have been able to attend Carthage. The generosity of the donors exemplifies how alumni feel about a Carthage education.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“One of my favorite Carthage moments was competing in the Federal Reserve Challenge in Chicago. Being a part of this experience exposed me to what it is like being an economist. It was really fascinating to see the inner workings of the Federal Reserve.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is The Tower. It is the perfect place to hang out with friends as well as do homework.”

Biggest surprise so far

“The biggest surprise is how committed the faculty is. Everyone I have met truly cares about your success. I have professors who I have not been in class with for over a year who still reach out to me to see how I am doing. It really shows the character of the people who work at Carthage.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“Students should consider economics because of its versatility and the outstanding professors in the department. There are many different fields you can work in with an economics degree. Furthermore, the economics/finance professors at Carthage are great mentors and teachers. They have helped me so much in my studies and life at Carthage.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because the College allowed me to receive a personalized education while also allowing me to continue playing tennis. The commitment from both my coaches and professors has made my academic and athletic careers unforgettable, and I am very fortunate to have chosen Carthage.”
