Rick Bingen ’15 is an alumnus of Carthage, where he majored in computer science and theatre. Prof. Bingen earned his master’s in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. While at Carthage, Prof. Bingen was a computer science tutor, resident assistant, assistant hall director, and the president of the Computer Science Club.

Since graduating from Carthage, Prof. Bingen has worked as a software engineer for West Bend Mutual Insurance. In just five years, he rose through the ranks from intern to senior software engineer and solutions architect, while also being tech lead of the commercial lines team. In his position with West Bend, he led a team of developers from around the world and helped make enterprise technology decisions. Prof. Bingen also helped other associates learn the fundamentals of programming, including best practices so they could earn the title of software engineer.

When Prof. Bingen isn’t working or doing schoolwork, he is most likely in a theater either watching a show or helping to create one. He has acted, directed, and designed light and sound for shows in the Milwaukee area. Prof. Bingen and his wife Kaila, a Carthage alumna, helped form the West Bend Theatre Company in their hometown. They both continue the tradition they started at Carthage of going to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario each summer.

His most memorable moment from his time at Carthage was after a show in the Wartburg Theatre when he jumped on stage at the end of the talkback to ask his wife to marry him.
