Professor Janet A. Levey, Ph.D., R.N.-B.C., C.N.E., is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Carthage College. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from DePaul University, her Master of Science in Nursing from Concordia University, Wisconsin, and her Ph.D. in Nursing from Marquette University. Prof. Levey’s doctoral scholarship focused on universal design for instruction in nursing education. Recently, she expanded her research on universal design for instruction to other healthcare disciplines. She is a Certified Nurse Educator through the National League for Nursing and Board Certified as an Ambulatory Care Nurse by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Prof. Levey advocates making nursing education more inclusive and accessible to a diverse student body, including individuals with disabilities. Prof. Levey’s past teaching responsibilities included classroom, simulation lab, online, and clinical settings in undergraduate (B.S.N.), R.N. to B.S.N., and graduate (M.S.N.) levels. She has taught at Alverno College, Cardinal Stritch University, and Concordia University in Wisconsin before coming to Carthage College. Prof. Levey has taught courses in population health, core foundational nursing, simulation, and gerontology clinical. She is committed to cultural diversity in nursing and has developed didactic and hybrid classes, along with short-term travel courses for undergraduate and graduate nursing students. As the course coordinator, she embedded the servant leadership model with students visiting an orphanage and an HIV/AIDS shelter at which they made educational health promotion presentations. Students became more culturally sensitive, aware, and connected with their behaviors while interacting with clients in practice. At Concordia University, Wisconsin, students recognized Prof. Levey multiple times as a Top 10 Faculty member.

Prof. Levey’s clinical background includes positions as a staff and charge nurse in a pediatric step-down unit, a staff nurse in a pediatric outpatient clinic hosting over 30 different weekly specialties, and an ambulatory urgent care clinic nurse in community-based settings. She is embedded in community health and safety and has served the American Red Cross for over 45 years as a Water Safety Instructor.

At Carthage College, Prof. Levey developed and led NSG4020/4020C Improving Health Outcomes of Populations based on critical and current concepts in community health nursing. She is deeply committed to improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations. She pilots and integrates new teaching strategies in the classroom. In the fall of 2018, she authored and launched a disaster event to satisfy the Quad Council and Public Health Nursing competencies for disaster preparedness and management of new graduates entering the workforce. Prof. Levey established over ten clinical sites based on the servant leadership model for the NSG4020 clinical course. She strives to provide meaningful theory to practice in clinical by providing unique learning experiences. Examples include having students participate in the Kenosha Family and Employee Mass Flu Vaccination Clinic and virtual health teaching sessions in November and December due to the closure of clinical school sites during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NSG 4020 clinical serves underserved populations whose access to healthcare teaching and screening is limited. Prof. Levey and her grant co-author, Carolynn Friesch, applied for and received a $20,000 Kloss Foundation Gift for educational models and screening equipment to fill this void.

In 2016, Prof. Levey was awarded the Norma Lang Excellence in Nursing Research Award by the Wisconsin Nurses Association. The same year, she earned the Outstanding Dissertation Award by the Midwest Nursing Research Society. The National League sponsored her dissertation research for Nursing Education Foundation. In 2017, Prof. Levey received a grant from the Nurses Foundation of Wisconsin to expand her universal design for instruction research to other healthcare disciplines. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and presented at the 2018 Sigma Theta Tau International Research Congress in Melbourne, Australia.

Prof. Levey has published in various refereed professional journals, including Journal of Nursing Education, Nursing Education Perspectives, Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses, Journal of Nursing Measurement, HAPS-Educator, Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability, and Journal of Library & Information Services in Distance Learning. In addition to her publications, she has given presentations at nursing and other professional conferences in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Australia.
