Majors and Minors Offered
Carthage awards two French language scholarships, each covering $20,000, each year.
The Modern Languages Department at Carthage offers a major and minor in French. The program and courses are student-centered and communicative, aimed at helping students achieve a wide range of personal and professional goals. You will be able to discuss what you’re learning not only in class, but also on field trips, at the French table, at film festivals, and with other students in French Club. Before you graduate, you will spend a semester or more studying and living in a French-speaking country.
If you test into a course and then earn a “C” or better, you can earn up to 12 free retroactive credits.
The French major is structured around a semester or more spent in a French-speaking country. Study abroad is required for the major and many French minors also elect to study abroad. During your time abroad, you will be immersed in real communicative situations with native speakers. This experience is a big part of what prepares Carthage French majors to be culturally aware and linguistically proficient professionals in an interdependent world.
A major in French can give you a competitive edge in your job search. Complimentary majors and skills to consider are business, computer science, communication and writing, customer service, education, psychology, political science, and biology. Companies near Carthage that employ French-speaking Americans include Bombardier Recreational Products, Diversey Inc., Jacquet Midwest, Wisconsin Credit Association, and Snap-On.
Students can also choose to be certified in TEFL, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, or TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
