Welcome to Alpha Psi Omega. APO is a national honorary theatre fraternity whose mission is to “seek a life useful.”
“Seek a life useful” can—and does—mean many things. Hear what each APO member what it means to them and they’ll tell you something different:
“Find that one spark in your life of happiness and fulfillment and never let it burn out. Protect it, let it grow and let that flame of joy shine throughout your whole life.”
— Courtney Matula ’14
“Life is the singular most beautiful, dangerous, and powerful gift that we are ever given. I’ll do the best that I can with the time I’m allotted by finding my own way to push the pebbles.”
— Alex Johnson ’15
“Searching for the beauty in every day and sharing it with others.”
— Christian Aldridge ’16
“Always finding new ways to tell a story to others.”
— Simon Skluzacek ’12
“Using my abilities in order to strive to impact an audience and compel them to react, feel, think and seek truth about themselves, each other, and the world.”
— Kaylee Annabelle ’13
“Living every day to the fullest in a positive and productive way not only for yourself, but touching others’ lives too.”
— Emily Mortiz ’15
The one thing these testimonies have in common is the sense of community APO strives to instill within the theatre department at Carthage and extend to the world at large. APO works very hard to think beyond our own lives and touch the lives of others. We do this through:
Relay For Life
In 2013, APO participated in Relay for Life for the first time and have decided to make it an annual event to walk together and show our support in the fight against cancer.
APO wishes to help our theatre brethren beyond the city of Kenosha by donating money earned through various means such as benefit concerts.
We are always searching for new ways to add to and improve our skills, and working with Milwaukee Libraries to record audiobooks helps us not only utilize our voices in different ways, but gives back to a local community.
APO vs Lamba Kappa Kickball
This is the annual kickball game where the theatre and music fraternities play games of kickball to earn bragging rights for the year.
APO members sell flowers during every show for the cast and crew members which is a small, but important, way to extend our congratulations to the cast and crew.
Upperclassmen cook and host a meal in the middle of the fall semester to get to know the freshman. This becomes a massive family meal.
The Ashby’s are Carthage’s own Tony award. Hosted at the end of every year, we nominate and vote on our favorites from the season. These are no ordinary awards as hilarious themes and ridiculous categories always equate to a fun evening.
APO Presents are monthly events that allow members of the department to show off their creativity through acting, directing, playwriting, etc. in innovative and student-initiated ways.
End of the Year Picnic
The End of the Year Picnic is a meal hosted by APO to celebrate the end of the year. We grill all sorts of food, bring yard games, and eat. It’s a fun send-off for the seniors and a great launch into the summer.
The best part about all of our community building events is that they are open and free to the public. You don’t have to be a member of APO to participate. This is because of our core belief in an united, strong, and generous theatre department. So keep your eye out for our many events throughout the year and we’re looking forward to seeing you there.
If you’re interested becoming a member of APO, simply work hard in the Carthage theater. Be involved in whatever you can, wherever your interests lie or try something you’ve never done before. The more you are involved, the more points you earn, the more eligible you become. If you’re curious about your progress, you can contact an APO Member who will help you with how you’re doing.
