The 2021 Celebration of Scholars is virtual and will be held on the Gather Town online platform. Participants will be able to view online presentations by our students, faculty, and staff and interact with other participants. Here are some instructions on how to use the Gather Town software. Click on the images below for a larger view.
Please note: You may have difficulty using Gather Town in the Safari web browser. Gather Town works best in Chrome and Firefox browsers.
The Celebration of Scholars event is virtual this year through Gather Town.
When you enter Gather for the first time, the system will ask for your name and to choose your avatar for the event. You can change your avatar’s appearance and clothing color.
The next screen will prompt you to select the video and microphones to use for the event.
If you are new to Gather, when you click on “Join the Gathering,” the following screen will take you to a brief tutorial for how to walk around and interact with other people and objects within the presentation room.
Navigating the Room
When you enter the room, you will be in the middle of the room with posters and other attendees spread throughout. To walk around the room, use the arrow keys on your keyboard.
When you approach other attendees, video chat boxes will automatically open for you to speak with them.
There are smaller white notice boards scattered throughout the main room that will display the Celebration of Scholars program. When you approach these boards, the board will have a yellow halo, and a small preview window will open at the bottom of the screen. To view the program, type the “x” button on your keyboard.
To speak with someone about their poster, walk into the darker gray box in front of their poster. Everyone in this space will be in a video chat. No one outside of the gray box will be able to see or hear the discussion.
A preview of the poster will display at the bottom of your window. To view the poster, press the “x” button on your keyboard.
When viewing the poster, you can pan across the poster by clicking and dragging the poster image around the screen with your mouse. You can also zoom in to get a closer view of the poster by clicking on the magnifying lens on the right middle of the screen (circled in red in the screenshot below). While zoomed in, clicking on the magnifying lens with a minus symbol will zoom back out.
While you view the poster, you are still video chatting with anyone in the dark gray square next to the poster.
Also when viewing the poster, the gray button with a person in front of a rectangular board activates the presentation mode. In presentation mode, when you click on the poster, other viewers will see where you clicked.
Finding a Specific Person
To find a specific participant in the room, you can click on their name in the side panel, then click on “Locate on map.” A line on the map will appear to show where that participant is.
Note that you may need to click on the picture of the two people in the lower-left corner of the window (as seen in the screenshot below).
We do not recommend clicking on the “Follow” button. This button will walk you to the participant, but it will take you through other participants’ private chat spaces.
