Joanne Polk Join us for a Performing Art Series event featuring American pianist Joanne Polk at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the A. F. Siebert Chapel.

Ms. Polk is a professional pianist who specializes in recording and performing music written by a variety of composers. After hearing a performance by composer Judith Lang Zaimont, Ms. Polk was inspired to focus on neglected musical works created by female composers. She was catapulted into the public eye with her performance of the complete piano works of composer Amy Beach (1867-1944) on the Arabesque Recordings label. The first rendition in the Amy Beach collection, “By the Still Waters,” received a 1998 Indie Award for Best Solo Recording. Two more of the recordings were applauded by both the New York Times and the American Record Guide.

In 2014, Ms. Polk released a CD titled “The Flatterer,” a solo piano rendition of music created by French Romantic composer Cecile Chaminade. This beautiful piece debuted at #1 on the Classical Billboard. This was the same year that Ms. Polk was named as one of Musical America’s Top 30 Professionals of the Year in an article called, “Profiles in Courage.” WQXR, a classical radio station in New York, displayed two of Ms. Polk’s CDs on air in 2019. She was also nominated for a Grammy Award due to her CD titled “Songs of Amy Beach.”

Ms. Polk received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from The Juilliard School, a performing arts school in New York. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts and is currently a part of the piano faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. While not performing, Ms. Polk can be found giving master classes at many universities and festivals across the country. In 2018, she completed a five-city, three-week concert and master class tour in China and Taiwan.
